SDZ/WDZ Technical Specialist

Engineer Safe & Effective Live-Fire Environments

  • Develop, validate, and document Surface Danger Zones (SDZ) and Weapon Danger Zones (WDZ)

  • Conduct risk analysis and support Composite Risk Management (CRM) processes, including DRAW

  • Ensure compliance with AR 385-63 and supporting standards

 

Design Expeditionary Range Solutions

  • Configure and deploy Expeditionary Range Package (ERP®) systems in austere environments

  • Support rapid setup and teardown of live-fire range capabilities

  • Integrate targetry, maneuver requirements, and training objectives into range design

 

Build Geospatial Products That Drive Decisions

  • Create GIS-based safety overlays, range maps, and digital products

  • Conduct terrain and line-of-fire analysis for range planning

  • Utilize tools such as ArcGIS and Range/Mission Training Kit (RMTK)

 

Support Operations in Real Time

  • Provide reach-back support to deployed RTG teams

  • Solve complex problems in live training environments

  • Operate alongside joint and multinational forces across the INDOPACOM theater

 

Integrate Weapons & Emerging Capabilities

  • Apply knowledge of direct fire, indirect fire, aviation, and UAS systems

  • Support ballistic modeling and effects-based safety planning

  • Assist with integration of new technologies into range environments

 

Develop Technical Deliverables

  • Produce SDZ/WDZ packets, GIS overlays, and range certification documentation

  • Support range modernization and future capability development

  • Deliver clear, accurate, and mission-ready technical products

 

Required Experience & Capabilities

  • Experience with SDZ/WDZ development and range safety engineering

  • Strong understanding of military training ranges and live-fire operations

  • Proficiency in GIS tools (ArcGIS or equivalent)

  • Familiarity with RMTK or similar systems preferred

  • Knowledge of weapon systems and their operational effects

  • Ability to operate in austere, high-tempo environments

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

 

Standards & Compliance

This role operates in accordance with Department of Defense and U.S. Army range safety standards, including:

  • AR 385-63

  • DA Pam 385-63

  • Applicable Army training circulars and host-nation regulations

 

Ethics Commitment

This position is strictly technical in nature and focuses on engineering, analysis, and product development. It does not involve participation in government acquisition decisions, requirements generation, or advocacy, and remains fully aligned with applicable post-government employment guidance.

Range Enabler Support

Execute the Mission on the Ground
 

Range Enabler Support personnel are the backbone of RTG field operations—executing range setup, target integration, and live-fire support in dynamic training environments across the Pacific.

Support Exercise Planning & Execution

  • Assist in developing SDZ/WDZ packets using RMTK

  • Coordinate with planners and training units to support exercises
     

Manage Equipment & Deployment

  • Inventory, pack, and deploy ERP equipment

  • Prepare HAZMAT documentation and shipping requirements

  • Emplace and recover target systems in the field
     

Operate Target Systems

  • Run RF/WiFi-enabled target systems including:

    • Stationary Infantry Targets (SIT)

    • Moving Infantry Targets (MIT)

    • Stationary Armor Targets (SAT)

    • Battlefield Effects Simulators (BES)

 

Troubleshoot & Maintain Systems

  • Perform system testing and fault resolution

  • Ensure operational readiness of all equipment

 

Ensure Safety & Reporting

  • Operate in compliance with AR 385-63

  • Collect data and submit AAR inputs

  • Supervise team members as required

 

Required Experience & Capabilities

  • 4+ years of range operations experience

  • Experience with target systems and ERP equipment

  • Familiarity with RMTK and range safety processes

  • Ability to operate in austere environments

Geographic Information System (GIS) Operator

Turn Data into Operational Advantage

The GIS Operator develops and manages geospatial data and products that directly support training, range development, and operational planning across the Pacific theater.

 

Develop & Maintain Geospatial Data

  • Create and manage GIS datasets and enterprise geodatabases

  • Maintain SRP data layers in accordance with Army standards

  • Ensure compliance with SDSFIE and QA/QC requirements

 

Produce Mission-Critical GIS Products

  • Deliver hardcopy and digital mapping products

  • Support training, planning, and range development

 

Manage Enterprise GIS Systems

  • Perform version control and data updates

  • Maintain file and enterprise geodatabases

 

Coordinate & Integrate Data Sources

  • Work with SMEs and NGA for imagery updates

  • Develop new geospatial layers as required

 

Maintain Mapping Products

  • Update installation maps and standard map products annually

  • Prepare materials for large-scale reproduction

 

Required Experience & Capabilities

  • Bachelor’s in GIS or related field

  • Experience with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and geospatial tools

  • Familiarity with enterprise GIS environments

  • Strong data management and analytical skills
